17/10/2014 Hi Everyone, Here is the 2nd part of the article from ‘The Living Document’ Volume 2 Spring 2008 What is Coaching?. Please enjoy and look forward to the 3rd part next week. Stage 1: Analysing for awareness Coaching will be pointless if the client does not recognise or believe that he or she has a need to learn. Such a client will be uncommitted and will make little effort to achieve set goals. So what can you do to help motivate your client? • The most common method for developing awareness is to start by asking the client to imagine, and then articulate, what a better life might look like (from their perspective). For example, what job would he or she prefer to be doing, what would they like their family life to look like, what kinds of hobbies or interests would he or she like to pursue? Note: Being concrete and specific is important here; it is hard to make vague goals a reality. Also, goals will need to be related to the coaching context. For example, if you are working with an MBA graduate who is an accountant for a large firm, you can begin by asking him where he would like to be 10 years down the road from here. Also, part of awareness involves assessing how things look and seem to be going at this moment in time. That is, it is important to examine the clients current role and level of performance, using objective standards of measurement. This may reveal a skill deficit that is hindering the clients progress. The coach and the client can then discuss and plan what could / should be done about this. Please “Like and Share” it.
