17th Annual Salisbury Confederate Prison Symposium The Robert F. Hoke Chapter No. 78 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy has announced the slate of guest lecturers for its 17th Annual Salisbury Confederate Prison Symposium, April 4-6, 2014. The event is dedicated to preserving, sharing, and expanding the history of the Prison and those who were there. Saturday, April 5 at the Tom Smith Auditorium in Ketner Hall on the Catawba College campus: Starting at 9:00 am and ending at 4:00 pm there will be a series of six lectures on subjects relating to the Salisbury Prison. Dr. Gary Freeze: Insights into the history and the study of the Salisbury Prison Peter Carlson of Maryland will talk about his new book on New York Tribune newspaper reporters Junius Browne and Albert Richardson who were captured in Mississippi and escaped from the military prison in Salisbury. Historian Greg Cheek of North Carolina will discuss Capt. George W. Alexander who was the seventh of the ten Prison Commandants. Prior to the war Alexander served in the US Navy. Author Aldo Perry of North Carolina will share information from his 2012 book about Confederate soldiers who were court-martialed. His emphasis will be on those sent to the Salisbury Prison for punishment. Dr. Lawrence Lohr of Michigan will speak on the sailors from the steamer USS Union who were captured when their ship ran aground on the Outer Banks and sent to Salisbury. Author Matthew Bumgarner of North Carolina will provide information on railroads that were used to transport prisoners, guards, troops, and supplies into and out of Salisbury.
