18 APRIL 1570: THE FUNERAL of William Herbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke. Lord Pembroke died on 17 March 1570 at Hampton Court Palace. His funeral was held at the Old St. Pauls Cathedral where he was buried next to his first wife, Lady Anne Herbert (Parr), Lady Pembroke. The amazing tomb erected for the two was sadly destroyed during the Great Fire in 1666. The Pembroke tomb was located between the choir and the North aisle. The tomb was/is by John of Gaunt (ancestor to Anne Parr) and Blanche of Lancaster, between the pillars of the 6th bay of the Choir. It was a magnificent structure consisting of effigies of the earl and his lady lying on a sarcophagus, attended by kneeling children, and the whole covered by an elaborate canopy resting on stone shafts.
