18 Dec: Two Miramichi men died on this date during WW II. In early November 1942, ‘B’ Company and Support Company of the North Shore Regiment were in Rottingdean, England, guarding the beaches in readiness for a potential enemy invasion. They were housed in the Tudor Close Hotel. On December 18, according to the regimental history, “Dickie Knowles of the carrier platoon looked out the window and remarked in surprise ‘Look! Someone’s dropping kit bags from that plane.’ ” The planes were German and the kit bags were bombs. There was considerable damage to the greenhouse of the hotel and surprisingly only one casualty. Private George Wilfred Stronach of Chatham was killed. Stronach was walking along an upstairs hallway when a bomb struck. He was the first NSR soldier to die as a result of enemy action and is buried in the Brookwood Military Cemetery, UK. Gunner Ralph Ellsworth Amos was the son of Eulalie Amos of Doaktown. He served in the 1st Anti-Tank Regiment of the Royal Canadian Artillery. 34-year old Gunner Amos was killed on this day in 1944 in Italy. Ralph Amos is buried in grave 6A7 in the Ravenna War Cemetery, Italy. Lest we Forget.
