1904…..On This Day. All firefighters in this region will tell you that the most challenging fires are on both the hottest and coldest days of the year. During the evening a fire got started in the two-story frame livery stable of Frank E. Taylor at 306 Blackberry Ave. Box 4 at Third and Market was hooked at 7:20 p.m. and the “fire laddies” turned out bundled up against the winter elements. Miserable bitter cold temperatures had gripped the area for the past month continued and icy streets prevailed. Accidents and mishaps were now becoming commonplace when responding to alarms. Before arrival of firemen, six horses were led to safety. The fire spread then to 308 Blackberry housing the Capitol City Cornice Works. Before firemen could bring the fire under control the stable was badly damaged and the roof of 308 had collapsed inward with heavy damage there as well. Overall loss was estimated in excess of $2,500. Icing conditions and the heavy smoke from the burning hay hampered firemen. While responding, the Mt. Pleasant Engine No. 8 hose wagon was involved in a collision with a trolley car at Cameron and Market Streets. Two firemen were slightly injured. The wagon also received slight damage but continued to the fire.
