1972 STOCK BROKERAGE Jerome Heartwell Holland (1916-85) was the first black to serve on the board of the New York Stock Exchange. Holland was an all-Amercan football player at Cornell University, New York, where he took his B. S. (1939), and M. S. (1941) degrees. He was the first black player on the Cornell footbal tam. After receiving a Ph. D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1950, Holland served as president of Delaware State College from 1953 to 1960, and of Hampton Institute from 1960 to 1970, when he became ambassador to Sweden. MISCELLANEOUS INDUSTRIE On May 16, 1972, the Johnson Publishing Company headquartes was dedicated. The eleven-story edifice was the first building built by blacks in downtown Chicago since the time of Jean Baptiste Point Du Sable.
