1979-80 Liverpool vs Grimsby FAC at Anfield. Has there ever been a bigger travelling support than that taken by the Mariners that day? It was estimated at 24,000, and saw two special trains, all the spare coach capacity in the whole of Lincolnshire used up (120 plus vehicles) plus thousands of cars. We had the whole of the Anfield Raod end, half the Kmelyn Road stand and a 2,000 overflow in the Kop. Crowd was just over 49,000, and LFC only had four games in excess of 50,000 that season (Everton, Leeds, MUFC and Spurs) In the next round they drew Bury at home and 33,000 in attendance for virtually a local derby - which shows the kind of support we took in comparison. There would have been restrictions, I assume, on travelling support in those days for the really big first division games, and I cant see that any side would have been allowed to take 24,000 for a league game?
