2 Chronicles 34:18 Shaphan also told the king, “Hilkiah the priest has given me a scroll.” So Shaphan read it to the king. 19 When the king heard what was written in the Law, he tore his clothes in despair. 20 Then he gave these orders to Hilkiah, Ahikam son of Shaphan, Acbor son of Micaiah, Shaphan the court secretary, and Asaiah the king’s personal adviser: 21 “Go to the Temple and speak to the Lord for me and for all the remnant of Israel and Judah. Inquire about the words written in the scroll that has been found. For the Lord’s great anger has been poured out on us because our ancestors have not obeyed the word of the Lord. We have not been doing everything this scroll says we must do.” People avoid truly studying the Bible. They claim lack of time, or the old excuse about not being able to get past the begats, however, the real reason is usually this. Gods Word is a mirror in which we see ourselves. We think we are fine until we look in the mirror and find out just how much of a mess we really are. Josiah was doing good stuff. He destroyed the idols, insisted people return to worshiping the Lord, and was getting the Temple back into good condition - yet when he heard the Word of the Lord he was in despair and took action immediately to try and make things right with God before disaster struck. Looking into that mirror can be painful, and it might mean giving up things we really enjoy, but getting our messes cleaned up, and drawing close to God makes it all worth the temporary discomfort. Consider reading His Word today and getting a makeover!
