20 July 1940: Action was confined mostly to attacks on Channel convoys, although the east coast of Scotland was also visited by German bombers. As usual, lack of a proper sea rescue system meant that pilots who bailed out over the Channel were likely to die. Sergeant Cecil Parkinson, 238 Squadron (was picked up but died the next day) Pilot Officer Edmund Sylvester, DFC, 501 Squadron (shot down near Cherbourg) Pilot Officer Frederick Posener, 152 Squadron Sub-Lieutenant Geoffrey Bulmer, 32 Squadron (the first Fleet Air Arm casualty of the Battle) Flying Officer Joseph Haworth, 43 Squadron (bailed out but not picked up) Sergeants Lockton & Corcoran, 236 Squadron (Blenheim crew lost over the Channel) Pilot Officer Alan Downer, 263 Squadron (crash-landed his aircraft and died the next day)
