200 break curfew in Missouri town wracked by riots 7 people arrested for failing to disperse; Irans Khamenei takes occasion to berate US for human rights record US Police used smoke bombs and tear gas to disperse demonstrators who defied a curfew in Ferguson, Missouri early Sunday, where a fatal police shooting of an unarmed black teen triggered a wave of racial tension and rioting. Missouri Governor Jay Nixon declared a state of emergency and a curfew starting at midnight Saturday (0500 GMT Sunday) until 5:00 am for the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson, where 18-year-old Michael Brown was shot dead by a white police officer on August 9. Ferguson was mostly peaceful when the curfew began on Sunday, but a crowd of protesters gathered in the area where Brown was shot and refused to disperse. Heavily armed riot police, backed up by reinforcements in armored vehicles, hurled smoke canisters and slowly moved in to break up the crowd. While the media images were dramatic, there were no reported incidents of violence. Khamenei takes US to task for rights abuse Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei used the occasion to berate the US record on human rights, alleging in a series of combative Twitter postings that the treatment in black people in America is incompatible with the criticism and sanctioning by the White House of other countries for perceived abuses. The flag of #HumanRights is borne by enemies of human rights w/US leading them! the leader wrote on the popular microblogging platform. Look at how US govt treats black community! Its not about 50-100 years ago but its about today! #Ferguson. He also named support for Israel as one of Americas transgressions against human rights. Brutal treatment of black ppl isn’t indeed the only anti-human rights act by US govt; look at US’s green light to #Israel’s crimes.
