2005, I met Marcus Gardley and from that day to this, I have deeply appreciated his work, his commitment to telling our story and stories in all their glory, complexity, richness, funkiness and fierce beauty. He is a brave truth teller. The theatre is richer for him and his work. Last night I got to sit in the house at Center Stage for the last evening performance of dance of the holy ghosts. It was a journey for me to get there and I am soooooo thankful to have seen/witnessed/experienced it. Ayi Kwei-Armahs classic novel The Beautyful Ones are Not Yet Born came to mind as I sat in the theatre, because truly Marcus play reminded me that there are beautiful ones yet among us who we must recognize and honor. Oscar. Thanking God for it allll... Bless you Marcus Gardley and Kwame Kwei-Armah. OH and the icing on the cake! Got to share the evening with the young man who made me a mommy, Djore Nance and reconnect with awesome sistah, Gladys Smallwood.
