2005, I met Marcus Gardley and from that day to this, I have deeply appreciated his work, his commitment to telling our story and stories in all their glory, complexity, richness, funkiness and fierce beauty. He is a brave truth teller. The theatre is richer for him and his work. Last night I got to sit in the house at Center Stage for the last evening performance of dance of the holy ghosts. It was a journey for me to get there and I am soooooo thankful to have seen/witnessed/experienced it. Ayi Kwei-Armahs classic novel The Beautyful Ones are Not Yet Born came to mind as I sat in the theatre, because truly Marcus play reminded me that there are beautiful ones yet among us who we must recognize and honor.
