2007년 전주영화제에서 하룬 파로키 강연의 모더레이터를 하는 영광을 누렸다. 그의 존재감은 역시 견고했다. 위트와 지성이 넘쳤다. 세련미와 확고함이 빛났다. 그러면서도 뭔지 모를 투명함이 그의 견고한 아우라를 감싸고 있었다. 마치 그의 영화의 원천처럼. 혹은 작품의 마법같은 효과처럼. 지금도 기억 속에서 그는 투명한 존재로 남아 있다. 마치 그와의 만남이 의사체험이었던 양... 책자에 그의 흔적을 남기지 않았더라면 아마 내 기억에 그는 유령으로 남았을지 모른다. 2-3주전 그가 타계했을 때 나는 영화관련 학술논문을 쓸 몇 안남은 이유 하나를 잃었다. I had the unimaginable privilege of moderating Harun Farockis talk at Jeonju film festival in 2007. Eloquent and passionate, witty and poignant, the late filmmaker was impressively illuminant, of course. Despite his firm aura, however, his presence carried certain transparency, perhaps as a ground or some hallucinatory effect of his observatory films. Somehow he remains that way even now within my memory as if his visit was some kind of spectral pseudo-event. I had to get the leaflet autographed, which I seldom do, perhaps as a certifying imprint of my encounter with the master. I lost one of a very few reasons left to write an academic paper on cinema when he passed away a couple of weeks ago.
