When I was 16 years old my mother took me on a trip that changed - TopicsExpress

When I was 16 years old my mother took me on a trip that changed my life. I traveled with my mom to Taiwan to stay several weeks with an order of nuns. They were the Our Lady of China of Taiwan. The stories I heard and even experienced while I was there...they are only coming back to my memory now. I had my first glimpse of military control. My first glimpse of the extremely poor....my first glimpse of true orphanages. But with all that I also saw how the nuns started a teaching hospital and trained the orphans to be nurses. Finding sponsors for each and everyone from all over the world. My mom sponsored at least 3 girls. 2 are nurses and 1 is a doctor. I heard the stories of how the nuns had to hide and sneak on to boats to find their way to a country they could practice their religion the way they wanted. I also got to meet the first American nun in Taiwan. She reminds me of the character Chumley in Call the Midwife. This was my first trip of many to Asia to explore and find myself....my love of Asia just grew from there....so what brought me here to this tonight. I happen to google Our Lady of China and wow....there it was. The book that started it all for my mom. An American Nun in Taiwan And yes I did buy a copy. If the nuns can find a place where they can be themselves...then we can too.
