2013 ISU Rocket Launch Takes Off July 27 The International Space University Space Studies Program’s Space Systems and Engineering Department will host the 2013 Rocket Competition on July 27 at 13h00 at the Jardin des Deux Rives, in Strasbourg – France. The model rocket competition, co-organised with Planete Sciences, is one of the department’s workshops designed to teach the participants how to work as a part of a team in order to successfully launch a model rocket within the specified parameters and meet the assigned requirements. Each team consists of participants assigned as payload engineers, propulsion engineers, flight dynamics engineers, and systems engineers John Connolly, NASA Johnson Space Center, Deputy Manager of the Exploration Missions and Systems Office comments: “The ISU student rocket launch has become one of the highlights of the ISU Space Studies Program. Teams of 4 students from diverse backgrounds are challenged to design and build a small rocket that will meet a specific set of requirements. They are only told what the rocket needs to do (loft a quail egg to the height of the Strasbourg cathedral, ie 142m and return it safely; fly twice in 60 minutes; and to minimize mass as much as possible.), but they are told nothing about how to actually build a rocket! In a short period of hours, they must converge as a team, learn rocket design software, prepare a design, construct that design, pass numerous safety checks, and fly the rocket for the first time in a competition against other ISU student teams. The ISU rocket challenge is meant to replicate the pressures and problems encountered by real-life "rocket scientists" - time for design and construction is limited, competition exists to win the prize, and sometimes the rocket requirements change in mid-design! The rocket competition illustrates the best of the International Space University - International, Intercultural team members combining their Interdisciplinary knowledge of "rocket science" to produce a rocket for friendly competition with their other ISU classmates.” This event is FREE for public. The Space Studies Program (SSP) is an intense nine-week course for postgraduate students and young professionals. During the SSP, participants are trained in various space-related disciplines and interact using their personal skills and background. Workshops in medicine, robotics, communication, astrophysics, telecommunication and others are organized. The SSP13 has gathered 100 participants from 24 countries. The curriculum covers the major space-related fields, both technical and non-technical and ranges from engineering, physical sciences and satellite applications to life sciences, policy, management and humanities. Members of the press are also cordially invited to attend the final rocket building workshop on Friday, July 26 from 9h00 to 12h00, at the International Space University in Illkirch-Graffenstaden.
