Its been nearly 4 weeks since my foot surgery. Today is my last day of leisure and pampering. I really lucked out on the timing. The past 4 weeks have been unseasonably warm and fair and Ive spent much of the time sitting out on the deck with my feet elevated. Poor me! So what follows is essentially an ode to the Bunion Goddess. As surgery goes, this was pretty uneventful. There wasnt much pain involved after the first couple of days. What the Bunion Goddess did for me, aside from fixing my feet, was to force me to sit still and live in the moment. She relieved me of social obligations and gave me time and space to breathe, to reflect, and to appreciate. She has provided me the opportunity to watch the phases of the leaves changing colour and giving themselves over to the dictates of the earths rotation and the law of gravity. Ive witnessed the migration of ducks and geese, and observed squirrels and chipmunks preparing for winter. Ive had time to have long conversations with friends and family. The Bunion Goddess has indulged my love of reading - mystery novels, serious fiction, non-fiction, short stories, poetry. She has granted me the time to do some creative writing. She has given us some bonus days at the lake. Autumn is, without question, my favourite season, and this year, I have treasured every minute of it. And now, all in good time, the Bunion Goddess is nudging me. I find that Im tired of all this sitting around. Shes saying, All right, off you go - get up and get moving. So here I go - onward and upward, with only 15 more work days before retirement. How appropriate that Im embarking on the next chapter of my life at this bittersweet time of year.
