25 April 1998: Ciaran Heffron, 22-year-old Catholic civilian, single and a student was taking a short cut home from the local pub in the village of Crumlin after a night out with friends. Mr Heffron left his friends about 2:30AM and was walking home when he was shot by the LVF outside the bus station in Upper Main Street. A taxi driver found his body. A paramedic treated Mr Heffron but was unable to save his life. Mr Heffron was a retail management student at the University of Ulster. A minutes silence was observed by the university campuses on the day of his funeral. Mr Heffron was home for the weekend to visit his seriously ill mother. The priest conducting the funeral mass said: the only reason for the killing was his religion. God had given these men the gift of free will, to do something good and noble or to do something cruel, cowardly and vicious. And, inspired by the devil, they made the decision to kill an innocent young man LEST WE FORGET!
