25JUN1864: It’s a day of bright ideas for the US Army. In Petersburg, US Army engineers decide to dig a tunnel from their lines forward underneath the CS Army lines. Never in the history of warfare has tunneling under an opponent ever lead to anything useful, thus it is the perfect project for the US Army of the Potomac. No worries, however. The US Army has plenty of “colored” troops who can be involved in this hare-brained project … just in case things don’t go well. Meanwhile, west of Marietta, Georgia, MG Sherman’s Miscreant Mob known as the Super-Army of the Mississippi faces the CS Army of Tennessee. The CS Army is very well entrenched and dug-in across Kennesaw Mountain on the northwest all the way down to Olley’s Creek to the south. Despite getting plastered each time he directly assaults General Joe Johnston … MG Sherman decides that perhaps one more time might do the trick. This is bright idea number-2 for the day. The third bright moment comes aboard the ironclad USS TECUMSEH, where CDR Craven is sailing his vessel as fast as possible down the James River. He cannot open his “secret orders” until he reaches the sea, and he is very anxious to get to Norfolk. He is running the throttle wide open. The boilers are super hot. The crew is sweating in the sizzling frying-pan ironclad as it tears crazily down the James at full speed on this hot summer day. CDR Craven is focused … intent on reaching the sea. His super-secret orders await. Suddenly … the USS TECUMSEH veers off course! With a loud shudder the ship grinds hard into the shallows and the crew is thrown off their feet. The USS TECUMSEH has run aground. Her wire steering ropes have broken after being burned half-way through by the heat of her boilers. Poor vessel design. Lazy crew. Crazy captain.
