26 WORKS PACKAGES AWARDED TO BUMIPUTERA CONTRACTORS FOR MRT PROJECT Kuala Lumpur, 15 August 2014: Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) awarded 26 work packages for the MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line to Bumiputera contractors from Grades G1, G2, G3 and G4 on 13 August 2014. This was MRT Corp’s third balloting session to award contracts to Bumiputera contractors. The first and second balloting sessions were held in January and December 2013 respectively. A total of 26 contractors were awarded contracts today, from a pool of 420 contractors, which had been shortlisted and screened by MRT Corp. Contractors under Grade G1 are eligible for work packages up to the value of RM200,000, while those in Grade G2 are eligible for work packages between RM200,001 and RM500,000. Grade 3 contractors are eligible for work packages between RM500,001 and RM1,000,000 while those in Grade 4 are eligible for work packages between RM1,000,001 and RM3,000,000. The grades are determined by the Construction Industry Development Board of Malaysia (CIDB). MRT Corp Director of Stakeholder Relations and Land Management, En Haris Fadzilah Hassan said that participation of Bumiputera contractors in the MRT Project has been very encouraging, going beyond the expected target. “Under the Bumiputera Agenda, a target was set that 43% of the total value of all contracts for the project would be awarded to Bumiputera companies. I am proud to announce that thus far, we have actually reached 46%,” he said. “This should push Bumiputera companies to elevate their role in the construction industry, because the capability is within them,” Haris said. He also highlighted the issue of safety, saying that it was of utmost importance that contractors always adhere with the standards set, in delivering their scope of works. “Action will be taken against companies that are found to be in non-compliance with MRT Corp’s safety regulations. This includes blacklisting companies whose contracts will be terminated immediately,” Haris emphasised. Overall however, Bumiputera companies chosen in the previous balloting sessions have performed well. MRT Corp will continue to nurture Bumiputera contractors, and provide them with a platform to thrive further in the projects to come.
