3 December 1976: Joseph Scott, 50-year-old Protestant civilian, married with 5 children, a traffic warden and a Reserve RUC police officer. was on school crossing patrol duty in Dungannon when he was shot. He lived at Drumrainey Gardens, Castlecaulfield and since 1974 he had been a part-time police reservist. RConst. Scott was shot as he was standing in the middle of a busy road at Chapel Corner. He was wearing his traffic wardens uniform at the time he was shot on a foggy morning. The November 1977 inquest was told that he was looking out his window when he saw a youth run up behind RConst. Scott and fire 3 shots at him. The inquest was also told that the children scattered in all directions. Some of the children were on their way to sit their all important 11-plus exams. One local man said: it was a brutal killing and he didnt stand a chance. He was well known in the area and highly popular with the children. It was reported in the Belfast Telegraph in April 1980 that a man who was suspected of being one of the IRAs top gunmen was being questioned about 30 killings in Tyrone. The killings being questioned centred in the Omagh, Cookstown, Dungannon, Aughnacloy and Coalisland areas. All the victims were almost all members or former members of the RUC or UDR. A 25-year-old fisherman from the Ardboe area was charged the following day with the murders of RConst. Scott and the murder of James Fowler, a UDR member. The man escaped in the June 1981 escape from the Crumlin Road prison along with 7 other IRA men. LEST WE FORGET!
