38 teachers from Bicol Region gained the Graduate Diploma in Cultural Education (GDCE) last May 24, 2014 as scholars of The National Commission for Culture and the Arts Philippine Cultural Education Program . 23 of the scholars are high school teachers while 15 are elementary grade teachers. They come from DepEd Divisions of Albay (12), Camarines Norte (4), Camarines Sur (4), Sorsogon Province (4), Sorsogon City (4), Masbate City (3), Legazpi City (2), Ligao City (2) and Quezon Province (1). NCCA-PCEP and Committee on Cultural Education initiated the program in 2008 in partnership with various Teacher Education Institutions nationwide. The program is composed of 24 units to be taken in two academic summer enrollment. As a post-baccalaureate academic scholarship, GDCE serves in the commission’s effort to support the enhancement and career development of basic education teachers and to mainstream a strong sense of cultural identity and historical awareness in the basic education curriculum and teaching practice. Bicol University is NCCAs partner for the GDCE since 2009. From its GDCE scholars, 6 had pursued and graduated with a Masters Diploma at the university.
