4-One Retro Corner This weekend, were going to try something new. An often requested feature from fans, we decided to ask one of them to give us a write-up on a classic game from an earlier generation console, and the choice for this week was the original Sonic the Hedgehog. Words by William Bargery. The year was 1991. #Nintendo was dominating with the #NES and this pressure caused Sega to create a 16-bit wonder, #Sonic the Hedgehog! When Sonic arrived, it was a breathe of fresh air and nothing could compete for speed. With visuals inspired by artist Eizin Suzuki, it gripped everyone world wide. The most iconic part was the initial Green Hill Zone with its colourful palette and layout, not to mention its great 16-bit soundtrack, would leave a lasting impression on fans. The music was a great collection of 16-bit bliss! From Green Hill to Star Light, everyone had a favourite (medley here - youtu.be/7rNhLa4Nx9g) Who could forget Dr Robotnik whose encounters were equally fun and challenging?! To conclude, the visuals, music, bosses and characters all combined to make a truly wonderful part of gaming history. Not bad for a guy being pressured by a plumber eh? ;) The original Sonic trilogy still stands the test of time to this day, with the transition to 3D generally leading to the blue blazers downfall, despite how much love there is for the Sonic Adventure series. Other Sonic Team highlights include Burning Rangers and Nights into Dreams, again with addictive gameplay and superb soundtracks. - If you have any fond Sonic memories, share them with us in the comments below.
