5.1 DVD Authoring. Ive generated stereo and 5.1 mixes of a feature I recently did and handed it off to the editor to go with the pictures. He insist on making the finished disc cos hes got a dvd burner and software, but the results are problematic. Hes making the disc with the 5.1 files only and the disc plays both 5.1 and stereo. It seems to be generating its own stereo mix that is dynamically different from my mix. Sections are higher and lower in volume by some dbs my questions are 1) how do 5.1 dvds handle stereo. should there be a slot in the dvd authoring software to also include the stereo mix, or is it using an algorithm to create one from the 5.1 material? 2) would you guys undertake the authoring yourselves of should it be sent into a production house and handled properly. I think the editor is trying dolby encoding, and they have qualified engineers for that specific task so is it really something we want to be messing around with?
