6 Aug 1920--FORMER HUNTSVILLE CITIZEN DEAD --Charles Hammett, 75 years old, former resident of Huntsville and one of the most prominent bankers and stock raisers of Randolph county, died at his home in Tulsa, Okla, yesterday morning, according to a message received by relatives here last night. Although Mr. Hammett had been ill for some time his death was unexpected and sudden. The remains will be brought to Huntsville where the funeral will be held tomorrow at 2 o’clock in the Methodist church. Interment will take place in the Huntsville cemetery. Mr. Hammett was the son of Joseph M. Hammett, one of the pioneers of Randolph County, who moved to Huntsville from Kentucky in 1828 having spent the two previous years in warren County. Charles Hammett was born May 30, 1845. After finishing his schooling he taught for a year and then returned to the farm, specializing in the raising of cattle, hogs and mules. A member of the firm of Hall & Hammett Bros., he was interested in extensive ranches in Colorado and New Mexico. He was also for years a member of the banking firm of J. M. Hammett & Co., of Huntsville. Some years ago he went to Boise, Idaho, where he was largely instrumental in promoting irrigation enterprises, and he was one of the pioneer builders of Tulsa, Okla., where he early invested in real estate. Mr. Hammett is survived by his widow, one son, Miller Hammett, of Tulsa, and two daughters, Mrs. Ladie Bell Beldwin, of Tulsa, and Mrs. Roy Blythe, of Moberly; and a brother, Dr. J. D. Hammett, of Huntsville. He was the uncle of Prosecuting Attorney Aubrey R. Hammett. --Moberly Monitor Index (Transcription of the Old Higbee News by-Kathy Bowlin)
