618 Franklin. Original large brick, built in 1855 by Lewis R. Reeves, lawyer before the civil War. (There is a newer home there now.) James L. Estes, real estate man, bought the house from Reeves and sold it to McCrary. George W. McCrary, a Keokuk congressman and later Secretary of War in Rutherford B. Hayes cabinet lived there. Montgomery Meigs, U. S. civil engineer lived there from 1900 to 1908. G. Willis Fanning and his wife and/or their descendents lived there for a half-century. It once faced North Sixth st.
