98 years ago today, the most wonderful man was born. My dad, Edwin H.(Pappy) Smith, grew up in Atlantic City New Jersey. He was one of 9 siblings. He worked from the age of 7 or 8 with his father on ice trucks and milk trucks to help support the family. He would get out of bed at 3am to go deliver milk with his dad then come home, get a couple hours of sleep then go to school. He dropped out of school after the 8th grade so he could earn income for his family. When he was about 22 he joined the Army. He served his country for 30 years including 3 years in WWII. He attained the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4. He retired here in Albuquerque and attained employment with the State of NM. He worked for the state for 11 years then retired. His life revolved around his family. His two kids, (My brother Mike and myself), 6 grand kids, neighbors and of course my wonderful mom, Marge. It was IMPOSSIBLE to buy him anything for his birthday or Christmas. He wanted to give not receive. His greatest pleasure was doing things for others. I learned so much from this man. He wasnt a lovey dovey huggy kissy kind of a guy. You just knew by his actions that he loved you. Even though he only finished the 8th grade, he was without a doubt one of the smartest men Ive ever known. He left us a legacy of hard work, honesty and genuine caring for others. I miss you so much dad. I love you with all my heart. Please give mom a kiss ok?
