A 5.45am start heading for the American Wigeon at Newport Wetlands - TopicsExpress

A 5.45am start heading for the American Wigeon at Newport Wetlands reported yesterday. Arrived at 9.45 and the bird was showing really well c.50 meters at first then drifting along the shoreline to 80-100 meters. Nice, as ever, to see Brian Thomas and Tom Chinick then along came Alan and, the delightful, Jess Cripps to join the rather small gathering at the seafront. After a while and a very kind offer from Alan (what a Gent) it was off for another over the bridge raid to Marshfield in Glos. to have a look at the Red-flanked Bluetail and boy was that well worth the trip! The bird showed well, moving along the stream over half an hour or so. There was quite a crowd at the site with brief views of Lee Evans who, I must say, cuts a somewhat forlorn figure, lonely almost. The only low point of the day was the terrible coach crash on the M4 near Newport but fortunately there were no fatalities, though how there werent Ill never know. Thanks to Alan and Jess for a great afternoon. ade
