A COMMENTARY: I usually watch and enjoy the CBS News Sunday - TopicsExpress

A COMMENTARY: I usually watch and enjoy the CBS News Sunday Morning program with host Charles Osgood. Almost nowhere else, in my opinion, can viewers obtain valuable information brought out in stories that normally do little to spark attention on the national scale. But this morning, I was saddened to see and hear a political commentary by contributor Nancy Giles who let her liberal views get the best of her. Her piece started out innocently enough by posing the insightful question of whether Americans should vote. And then she laid out her own past performance by admitting that she was never really concerned about local elections as she was with the much more interesting national elections, especially those that elected presidents. But then she dropped the bombshell by saying, “Between shutting down the government, voting countless times to repeal or change the Affordable Care Act after it became law, and being on track to be the least productive Congress in 20 years, I finally realized that those little local representatives I never paid attention to play a huge part in running the country.” Furthermore, she said, “Bills that became law on the state or local level often have national impact, from restrictive voter ID laws, to raising the minimum wage, to new gun laws.” Of course, I agree that all American citizens should make the time to register and then cast their vote on election day. The majority feel the same way I do. I’m amazed, however, that 31 percent of people in a recent poll claim that their votes do not count, so they stay home. Everyone has a right to an opinion, but for a commentator like Nancy Giles, without an opposing counter-viewpoint, to appear on a national news program and discredit the current Congress for being “the least productive . . . in 20 years” is asinine. Of course this has been the recurring theme song of Democrats and their leader Harry Reid, who neglect to fess up to the American people that they, in effect, are the real reason for gridlock. The members of the Republican majority in the House of Representatives do their job, but Harry Reid will not let their bills advance in the Senate. Yes, Nancy Giles, the government was shut down, as it has many times in our history, and by both parties. But nowhere is it written in our Constitution that either the House or the Senate has to rubber-stamp the agenda of the sitting President. That would equate to dictatorship. And, too, the Affordable Care Act became law only with the support and vote of the House and Senate, both controlled at the time by a Democrat majority. No Republicans voted for the repugnant act, known as ObamaCare, which was not then something that our citizens wanted. In fact, depending on what poll one chooses to use, ObamaCare would be repealed or vastly overhauled if Americans had their way. And what about those restrictive voter ID laws, and new gun laws that Giles mentioned. Voter ID laws have been put on the books and enforced to guarantee as near as possible that only legalized and registered voters get to participate in one of our basic freedoms. In this day and age, to require a person to present a photo ID is not discriminatory. The real reason as to why some do not have an acceptable photo ID is that they are probably just too lazy to get one. And about those new gun laws, what about them, Nancy Giles. By way of our Constitution, Americans have the right to keep and bear arms. Period! Yes, Nancy Giles, I have already cast my early vote in this year’s mid-term election. I presented a valid photo ID, and I did so proudly, knowing that our Texas officials do their part to stamp out voter fraud. And in so doing, I did my part to get rid of the gridlock in Washington. I voted straight Republican.
