A Devotional for such a time as this: - from: Wilberforce, W., & Belmonte, K. (2006). 365 Days with Wilberforce (p. 122). Leominster, UK: Day One Publications. ___________________________ ‘The duty of constant prayer’ ‘by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.’ 2 Corinthians 4:2 SUGGESTED FURTHER READING: 1 Thessalonians 5:16–24 To your young friend again I need not suggest the duty of constant prayer for his nearest relatives. By degrees they will become softened, and he will probably enjoy the delight of finding them come over to the blessed path he is himself pursuing. He will also find that self-denial, and a disposition to subject himself to any trouble or annoyance in order to promote his friends’ comfort, or exemption from some grievance, will have a very powerful effect in conciliating his friends. FOR MEDITATION: How many a beloved son or daughter has come to faith only to find that for long years they had been pursued by the prayers of a loving parent? How many have had a cherished friend testify to a blessed surrender to God, only have that friend learn upon the occasion that during all the years when this friend wanted nothing of God, prayers were offered for them continually in the watches of the night? Prayer renders the hopeless hopeful. And though we cannot see all ends that are known to God, there are those times when, with hindsight, it shall be given us to see that our prayers have been instrumental in some end that has been a desire of the heart. The eighteenth-century poet William Cowper wrote: And Satan trembles when he sees The weakest saint upon his knees. Our prayers, however halting or humbly voiced, are never for nothing. God hears and answers prayer. We should go to him. He is waiting. He is there, as he always been, at our point of greatest need.
