A Hamilton man who earned perhaps the worlds first doctorate - TopicsExpress

A Hamilton man who earned perhaps the worlds first doctorate in bogan studies wants to spread the metal message beyond the ivory tower. Dave Snell, who graduated from Waikato University in 2012 with a PhD in social psychology – specifically the culture of heavy metal music – has switched to fiction, penning a screenplay. Hes enlisted a bunch of metal-loving mates to star in bogan buddy comedy Sort of Famous, and with funding from Creative Waikato plans to start shooting in August, at home in Hamilton. Dr Snell says the city where he studied, and now works as a researcher, has perhaps the biggest concentration of bogans outside of west Auckland. A lot of working-class people live in and around Hamilton. If youre looking at more the car culture side of boganism, theres a lot of smaller towns that are all still quite close to Hamilton like Cambridge, which has quite a few hot rod clubs, says Dr Snell. It seems like theres a factory in Te Awamutu that just churns out bogans, because every second or third bogan I meet is from Te Awamutu… people move from there and gravitate to Hamilton. Dr Snell got the idea for Sort of Famous after publishing a book based on his PhD, 2013s Bogan – An Insiders Guide to Metal, Mullets and Mayhem. Me and a friend, Fro, were having a couple of beers to celebrate and then we sort of made the joke, well, weve done the book, why dont we do a movie? The joke soon became reality, but rather than make a documentary few people would watch, they opted for comedy. We wanted it to be something that everyone would be interested in, says Dr Snell. We came up with this fictional story about these three bogan guys trying to become famous, and thought that using a fictional story would be a way to get across some of those bogan messages and some of those ideas from my research – but in a more entertaining, acceptable kind of way. The story follows two metalhead radio hosts and their 80s wrestling-obsessed manager, wholl be played by Dr Snell himself. The rest of the films cast will be largely comprised of genuine bogans, including Paul Martin and Nail from Hamilton band Devilskin and Doug MacFarlane of Auckland-based Bloodnut, and will feature a cameo from Westie icon Ewan Gilmour. The funding theyve got so far will cover an extended, eight-minute trailer – possibly even more. Most of the time people are going to be turning up just dressed in the clothes they normally wear anyway, and bogans have this aversion to makeup, so I dont think were going to have a huge overhead. Itd be a pretty cheap movie to make. Dr Snell hopes the trailer will be good enough to secure them funding for a full-length feature. Its that underdog story – I guess much like the movie itself, its just having an idea and trying to get it done on your own merits. This extends to the soundtrack, which Dr Snell hopes to fill with local metal bands – likely to be the easiest part of the whole production. As soon as I started talking on Facebook and to mates about how were making this trailer, everyone starts arguing about the soundtrack before were even talking about what the story is. Everyones, youve got have these guys on it and youve got to have this band on it and Im like, we havent even made the movie yet. Bogans are more worried about that than what the trailers going to be like.
