A History of Ordinary People ------------------------------------------ The more I study history, the more i realize how constrictive is the narrative leaving out the poor and the disadvantaged. Do historiographers notice that in the name of the shaheeds we construct the history of the middle and upper class only. We like the numbers as an expression of our anguish but our telling is limited to the experience of the very few. We write about those who know. In the process we are saying only one history exists, the one we tell and this expulsion of the poor from history is so surprising acceptable to all. Or is it not too surprising ?
