A LITTLE QUIZ for dog owners: Ask yourself these questions and be honest - only you know the answers: 1. Has your dog ever surprised you by doing something incredibly sweet? 2. Has your dog ever surprised you by doing something really funny? 3. Has your dog ever surprised you by chewing up a roll of toilet paper, sofa cushion or throw pillow, a shoe? 4. Has your dog ever surprised you by momentarily not responding to a command he/she knows extremely well? 5. Has your dog ever surprised you by either really liking someone you didnt think they would or really disliking someone you never expected them to? 6. Has your dog ever surprised you by stealing food from a plate, off of a table or counter, or out of someones mouth or hand? 7. Have YOU ever momentarily lost your cool and then felt badly about it later? 8. Have YOU ever just had a bad feeling about someone that you couldnt explain? 9. Have YOU ever had a heated argument with a loved one or family member? 10. Have YOU ever done something you shouldnt have but knew better about? i.e., run a red light, cheat on your diet, fail to bring an overlooked item to a cashiers attention, tell a little white lie, say or do something to hurt someones feelings in anger? If you can answer yes to even ONE of these questions, this shows a couple of things. You AND your dog are NOT a programmed robots. Your dog has a mind of its own, just as you do. Now ask yourself this - if your dog was able to surprise you in the above ways, what makes you so certain he/she wont surprise you in a dangerous way? If your OWN behavior has sometimes surprised you or youve acted out at a moments notice without weighing the consequences, what makes you so sure your dog is immune from this sort of behavior? If you own a dog that is CAPABLE of inflicting catastrophic damage when they attack - you are trusting that this animal will ALWAYS do the right thing, ALWAYS act with forethought as to consequences, ALWAYS recognize that you are its family and NEVER ONCE lash out at you, or others, even momentarily. You cannot control a dogs mind or actions FOR THEIR ENTIRE LIFE 100% of the time. It only takes ONE indiscretion to seriously injure or kill someone.... WHY would you take that chance, knowing that you could NEVER reverse what has happened once it does or if it happens.
