A Letter to Uncle Shi Dear Uncle Shi, I hope today finds you well. My high school years have passed so quickly. During these three years, I obtained much knowledge and made many friends. Meanwhile, I became more mature. I really appreciate your care and support through these three years. Today is July 12. I just got the news that I got early admission to Southwest University . Since my major is teaching, my tuition is waivered. Actually, I had written a letter to you. However, I decided to give up application for support from Zhong Mei Aixin, thus, I am writing you this new letter. In fact, this year I did not do well in the college entrance exam. My score is 524, which is 55 points higher than the score line to first tier universities. But I can not get into my dream school Suzhou University. The night before the college entrance exam, my grandma suddenly suffered from cerebral infarction. One hand and one foot were paralyzed and she suffered from incontinence. Someone had to take care of her all the times. When she was discharged from the hospital, my father and she went back to our home village together. So my mom and I had to run the breakfast stand. During those days, my mom and I had to get up at 2am every day. After a day’s work, I felt sore and acre everywhere. So when I filled out the application form, I chose to be major in teaching/education so that I can get free education. Because once I go to college, it will be very difficult for my mom alone to make money. I don’t want to be her burden. Now since I am admitted to be a student majoring in teaching/education with tuition waived, my mom won’t have to be worried about my tuition every August/September for the following years. In my last year in senior high school, I not only achieved a lot in study, but also experienced a lot in my life. In order for me to focus on study, my parents rent a room near the school. And they leased a small space from the landlord to run a breakfast stand. I still recall that last summer was very hot. My whole family had to stay in the room, which is less than 10 square meter. We only had one electric fan. My father could not tolerate the heat. So before going to bed, he would stand in front of the door to get some cool air. In my classroom, there was an air conditioner. Usually the temperature inside the classroom stayed around 20 degree while the outside temperature was around 38 degree and 39 degree. The breakfast stand my parents worked was full of stoves and the temperature could reach as high as 40. Every time I got out of the classroom, I felt it was too hot to endure. At that time, there was large area burn on my mom’s leg. I was worried that her wounds would not heal completely. Luckily, we went through this difficult time. This hardship made me become more mature: what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger! But I can’t repay the efforts and sacrifice my parents made for me. Therefore I not only chose to major in teaching/education to get free education, but also plan to do part time jobs in college to lessen their burden. The Southwest University is located in Chongqing city. It looks so far away from my hometown on the map. I have never travelled before. This time I have to go to college in a place far away from my home. Looking forward, the college will be a good place for me to study and grow up. I will take new challenges confidently and independently. Uncle Shi, you are in my life all these three years. Although I neither saw your face or heard your voice before, and I had no idea about your birthday day, age or other personal information, every time when I got the donation from you, I felt I was so close to you. Thanks very much! Wish you happiness and good health! Student Name here (deleted for privacy) Class 1, 12th Grade, Anhui Ningguo High School July 12, 2014
