A Mother’s Prayer….. Please hear my heartfelt and desperate plea to save my daughter’s life. As a parent, one of our strongest instincts is to love, nurture, cherish, encourage and protect our children from harm’s way. The values we instill in them and the examples we set for them, we trust will equip them with the essential skills necessary to ensure that they become happy and healthy, productive members of society. The kindness, compassion, respect, patience, and understanding that we show them we expect for them in return to give generously to everyone they come in contact with. Ultimately, in time, our dream is to see our children flourish and achieve things even beyond their wildest dreams. In November 2004, those dreams for my daughter, Idrelle, came crashing down when she was suddenly diagnosed with a life-threatening kidney disease while still attending high school. Idrelle, a star basketball player on her team, learned that she could no longer play basketball with her teammates due to her failing health. Eventually, Idrelle’s health began to improve and she received a full tuition athletic scholarship. Unfortunately, due to complications with her disease, she was unable to accept this generous offer. Despite her setbacks, Idrelle worked very hard to earn her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Sociology, often times studying for exams while laying in her hospital room bed. Even under the most normal circumstances, obtaining a college degree is difficult and yet Idrelle accomplished this in a timely fashion! Idrelle’s dream is to further her education and become a physician so that she can help others like herself. However, without a kidney donor, her dream could be shattered. As a mother who is crying out loud, who feels hopeless, I am begging my faithful brothers and sisters to come forward and help my daughter. I know there is someone out there with a great heart who can make her dream come true. I know it’s a lot to ask anyone to embark on such a major medical decision, but she needs your help. She would be forever grateful to a donor. She is such a wonderful human being, one everyone would love to have as a daughter, sister, or friend. She always focuses on the positive and remains hopeful that someone will give her the “Gift of Life”. A kidney is the most expendable of organs. If we were to ask God why he gave us two kidneys, perhaps his answer would be so that we would have an extra one to donate and save a life! As a kidney donor myself, I can tell you that kidney donation is a relatively safe operation. Thank you for allowing me to share my story. May God Bless You!
