A New Girl in the City It was my first day in college. I was already late for class and I coudnt find where room no. 81 was. My first bengali class. It was that unforgetful moment when I first saw him. I asked for directions and he turned. His eyes were staring right into mine. Fixed upon me. I asked him again. He lead the way. He was wearing a kurta with blue jeans. He had an athletic build, with a slight moustache. He had a few hairs falling on his forehead. I looked at his lips. Chapped. He noticed that I was looking at him. We reached the classroom. I was about to enter when he asked me ‘whats your name?’ I was about to say Mrinalini, that I saw that Sir was headed this way. I hurried inside the room without even looking back. I cursed myself for ignoring that beautiful question. I again saw him again at recess. My heart leapt with joy. I went to him and said my name. “Myself Hridoy”, he replied. I shifted to Kolkata last night with so many hopes and ambitions. But ever since I met him, I forgot about everything. My heart just wants to hear his voice saying my name. I was studying under the tree when Hridoy came and sat beside me. We talked for a while. The bell rang. It was time for the next class. I was about to rise when he held my hand. My heart stopped for a while. ‘Don’t go!’, he said. I resisted. He asked for my number. And that’s how it all started. The next four months were so beautiful with him. We would talk for hours. He said he loved me. I said ‘Same to you’. Then we both started laughing at my inappropriate choosing of words in wrong time. Then he was begging me to say those three words. If only he knew I had already said that a thousand times in my mind. He showed me the entire city. We would walk for hours. He took me to such amazing places. He showed me the Indian Museum, the Writer’s building, Lal Bazar, Shahid Minar and so many parks. I had heard Kolkata is the city of joy but I found love as well. Life had just started being beautiful. He had the most incredible smile. His front two teeth were crooked. I think that’s what made his smile more cute. I was proud of every moment I spent with him. He made me feel special. Most importantly, he made me forget about my past ‘I would never leave you’ he once said to me. I guess not every promise was meant to be kept. It was my birthday when everything changed. He had gone to his native place for a week. When he returned, he looked completely different. I asked whats wrong. He said its nothing and changed the topic. I waited for his call on my birthday. He never called. I went to college and looked for him. He was sitting with his friends, chatting. He waved at me to come out. He refused. On top of that he yelled at me. I was so shocked. A sudden attack of insanity had striked him. i went back to my class, quietly sobbing. I never saw him so angry. Later that night he called me. I thought he’d apologize. But he had called me only to say that he’d never call me again. I didn’t know what to say. I didn’t even have the courage to open and ask ‘Why?’. But later, he added, ‘my father has fixed my marriage with the District Judge’s daughter’. I just asked him one thing ‘Did you ever love me?’. The next two minutes of silence had shattered my entire world. He left town after two days, I heard. I would never fall in love. I promised myself. A part of me changed that night. I wasn’t that innocent, gullible girl anymore. I wasn’t a new girl in the city anymore, I realized. Ghosh Inc Presents || MRINALINI || || Sourodip ghosh photography ||
