A Now and Then Winter Greeting from the Historic Districts of Reading. Todays images show the top of Penn Street looking into Penns Common/ City Park. The first image is present day ( actually during todays snowstorm). The 2nd image is the same exact location circa 1930. Several changes happened during the timespan the two photos were taken. The Berks County Prison was relocated and the Gothic building that had housed the prisoners in Penns Common was demolished. The stone retaining wall to the left was shortened for easier access of traffic from Perkiomen Avenue onto N. 11th Street. And lastly and more recently, the Firemans Memorial was relocated to the site along with the creation of a plaza to act as a focal point at the intersection. Share our page for all to enjoy!
