A Personal Word from Pastor Darryl Wood... “Black Friday” - TopicsExpress

A Personal Word from Pastor Darryl Wood... “Black Friday” has been declared dead on arrival this year. Oh, unless the Lord comes back, the Friday after Thanksgiving will arrive on the calendar. But it will no longer be “the” day for early Christmas shopping. Many large retailers have announced openings on Thanksgiving Day. And the sales start before that. It all makes you wonder when stores will start leaving Christmas items out all year. If the consumerism of Christmas keeps on creeping up on the calendar, that’s what it will amount to. (I have been in a few houses in July when the Christmas tree was still up from the year before.) As a Pastor, I feel like I ought to have some big theological statement to make about this Christmas “calendar creep.” But I really don’t. In fact, as a Christian I’m not really sure I’m against it. You see, for believers Christmas is not a season of the year. It’s a state of mind and heart. The importance of Jesus’ coming to me is not limited to a few days in November and December. My heart is red and green year ‘round. That truth should be kept in mind as you prepare for the jolly season. Prepare to make it more about Jesus this year than ever. Enjoy the decorating, shopping, gift giving, etc. But keep Jesus up front. If you want to ruin a good, restful, family Thanksgiving by abandoning the turkey for the mall, just go right ahead. As for me, I don’t need retailers to dominate my calendar. My celebration has started already. Merry Christmas! Be in your place Sunday for a word from the Lord.
