A STORY: HOLD THE LIGHT A teenage boy stood on the side of the road through storm and rain holding a light. His father had gone to find help for the car that they had been driving had broken down but there also seemed to be something more on his mind. The boy stood there faithfully. He cried and shivered continuously. he was offered several rides home and much shelter to another place but He said no thank you my daddy told me that no matter what I was to stand and hold the light. One traveler said This is ridiculous! You need to try to get home. The little boy said, Sir I know how to get home. I know where it is. That is not an issue but maybe my standing here will help someone who does not know there way to find their way. I do not know. Daddy just said to stay here and hold it. Just then am elderly gentleman approached them both and said I finally made it! I met a man who told me that I could find my mother who is dying in the house where a young man was standing holding a lantern in the dark. He shared what you would be wearing and how you would look. I laughed and said...Cmon! Quit being stupid. No one is going to be out in this dark abandoned neighborhood in a storm holding a light. Give me something else to go on He shared that the father repeated the instructions as he forged on. I began my walk angry that he would insult me so. I grumbled and was mad at God because my mother is dying and he would bring a storm and darkness so thick that I can barely see. I have no car or idea of where I am and the only person who I talk to is a man senseless enough to think that a teenage boy would be in this storm holding a light. He asked the boy, Do you know Ms. Cleopatra McNair? The little boy said with a trembling voice, Ms. Cleo lives right here in this big ole pretty house. She always keeps it neat and the flowers sooo pretty. She knows me well and although I am cold I feel safe in front of Ms. Cleos house. She is probably awake. Knock on the door and she will answer. The man did so. In his rebellion he had not seen his mother for 15 years. He was afraid she may have passed already. He called her name and a faint voice said come in. He entered the room and cried tears of great joy. She grasped him and said I knew you would make it. I knew you would not let me leave without saying goodbye. He said mother I have been gone 15 years. How did you know? She said, The Lord told me that a man would meet you on the path and give you directions to me. He said that a light would be given on this stormy night that would shine in the storm and you would find your way to me. I wondered why young Leroy was standing out there in that storm and rain like that until it occurred to me...He was that light. His father left him there, in part, to help you find your way home. There were no street lights and God used young Leroy. The man paused and pondered the events that had occurred that night. Just then he heard his mother take a deep breath and then she passed. He looked at her and she was smiling. She clutched a picture of him and her in her hand upon which she had written always his mamas baby. He walked outside and the boy was sitting on the porch now. The lantern was out and he was resting in a chair. Come in the man said. There is no need for your being out in the cold and rain. The young man said, Daddy got our car and he told me to stay here on the porch until he gassed up. He would be right back to get me. He is going to take me home. He fixed the bed and a put a meal in the crock pot for me so I could eat when I get home. The man said, your dad seems to think of everything. My mom just died but I got to see her thanks to your dad and you. The young man smiled and spoke Ms. Cleo died didnt she? She was a good lady. Tonight she went to her fathers house. Maybe daddy wanted me to hold this light so that the angel could find Ms. Cleo. Sir, she always wanted to see you and you made it just in time. It is so glad to meet you. After you do what you must for Ms. Cleo I want you to know that you are always welcome at my fathers house. Here is his business card. Let it serve as a standing invitation. I am going to put this light on our porch so you can find us in the dark. Daddy lights it every night. As the boy drifted off to the car with his father the man felt no need to go talk with the father. The son had said and done enough to let him know that the father was speaking through him. The invitation to his fathers house seemed deeper tha a basic invite. He would take him up on his offer. Just like his mother at just done when she died and went to THE FATHERS HOUSE. ~ Vern
