A Wavering Response Luke 8:7, 14 The third response to the seed that was sown is a wavering response; some of the seed fell among thorns, which inhibited fruit-bearing (vv.7, 14). Undoubtedly, some make a profession of faith in Christ but eventually waver in their profession; they finally abandon that testimony and ultimately reveal that there was no real spiritual life to begin with. But, comparing this wavering response with the one to follow-the godly response-the issue under consideration is not whether someone is saved or not but, rather, whether or not he is allowing the seed of the Word to produce the marks of a godly believer, that is, unmistakable fruitfulness. Disciples indeed are those who are truly saved and then continue in (His) Word (Jn.8:31). Those who waver go forth to serve the world rather than the Lord (v.14). Their intention is no doubt good, but the Word is not given its proper and essential place or preeminence in their life. Other things are more important. The Word is choked because the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches...(Mk.4:19) prevent the single-mindedness required of those who are fruitful disciples indeed. If we hear the Word and its call to a separated life and ministry but do not fully obey, then the Word of God cannot effectually work in us as it should (see 1 Thess.2:13). What do we allow in our heart and life that we know hinders the Words working within? Identify the besetting sin, confess it to the Lord as such, tear out this dangerous thorn by the roots, and cast it far away-now! If we do not, our inner man will be spiritually choked, and no fruit will be found. Much is at stake here-we must take heed!
