A bit late but here it is....review for Guardians of the Galaxy!! Hmmmm...where to begin. So, Guardians of the Galaxy is part of Marvels phase 2 of their super hero movie franchise. Phase 1 consisted of Iron-man and his Avenger mates protecting the earth from anyone willing to commit evil, either alone or assembled together. For the most part its been a fun and action filled watch. The latest movies being of a particular high standard in the form of Thor 2 and Captain America 2. Now, Guardians is little known in the comic book world, let alone the movie world so to kick off phase 2 with this cast of weirdos is a pretty big gamble......did it pay off?! Well, we will get to that :) The plot revolves around a shifty yet charismatic thief by the name of Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), although hed like to be known as Star Lord. Unknowingly, he just happens to steal an infinity stone that is extremely dangerous if it were ever to be found in the wrong pair of hands. So basically the gang of Guardians are thrust upon each other through the cat and mouse chase involving this artefact. This gang consists of walking, slightly talking tree called Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel). A hot green alien girl called Gamora (Zoe Saldana), a majorly pissed off psycho called Drax (Dave Bautista) and of course the star of the show - Rocket - a genetically modified Raccoon with as much charm as a rabid cat (Bradley Cooper). This is the film that finally introduces the big baddy of the galaxy.....Thanos!! He appeared at the end of The Avengers and many have been waiting to see just what exactly his intentions are. Sadly, this is postponed yet again to introduce another bad guy in the form of Ronan the Accuser (a beefed up Lee Pace). He is hell bent on destroying the planet that he blames for the death of his dad, grandad yadda yadda yadda....its the same old story Im afraid. The motivations are that simple. This is the problem I had with Guardians. Its a film that promised so much, especially with the trailers that were released. So how can a film that has a talking raccoon and a walking tree feel so damn familiar?!! James Gunn, the director, states that he filmed scenes strictly for the trailers....why? This means that a few of the major actors such as Glenn Close, John C Reilly and Benicio Del Toro were shamefully underused, with lines being cut from what you see in the trailer. Its a film that owes a lot to Star Wars, Star Trek and, in my opinion, Thor 2 with the last 15 minutes seeming very close to what we saw happen in London in the climax scene of The Dark World. The score is far from memorable with the soundtrack made up of a handful of songs picked from a best of the 70s CD. Dont get me wrong, there are some funny scenes/lines throughout that makes it watchable but Im sorry to say it really isnt this generations Star Wars which is a comparison I had seen being passed around some movie review columns. For an opening film into this group of heroes we just dont get enough time to get to know each character, everything happens too fast, cutting out any middle parts. All in all, its not one of Marvels most memorable films but its far from being a bad film, its just okay. The script can come across as a bit empty with it being taped together with one liners and smart ass comments, shadowing any real dialogue relating to story or character exposition. With a running time of 2 hours it might try the patience of kids but they will love it for Groot and Rocket alone. 6/10 121mins 12A
