A bit of an update from over the festive season..... Its been pretty busy all in all with as usual a wide range of jobs landing on my front doorstep....(sometimes literally!). To give you an idea there has been several minor traffic crashes, one major (yesterdays at Te Kao), water rescues and of course sadly our drowning fatality. Domestics, civil disputes over property and a couple of thefts along with the usual range of lost and found property matters. Oh yeah and also an attempt to deposit an injured penguin on my step! And of course the horse on the truck saga...which has had well over 2 hundred thousand views on facebook by the way! Of note personally I donned my blue suit on New Years Eve for what would be my last remembering (and feeling reasonably sentimental) that my very first day on the beat after graduating Police college was also on a New Years Eve - that was 18 years and numerous wrinkles and grey hair ago though. There was one night over this New Years period I had worked until 8pm then got called out twice during the night - once to a domestic with an offender playing up - then to an also violent and unpredictable mental health patient - not getting home until just before 7am just to have Tony (from Pukenui school) arrive bright as a button to help take down the station Christmas tree (prearranged without knowing I was going to have a sleepless night obviously). Ironically after dealing with a night of violence without incident I then stepped on a broken Christmas light which embedded itself deep into my foot and refused to stop bleeding for several hours and is still giving me pain!! mmmm I couldnt help but dwell on the irony of that little mishap! Anyway less than 10 actual work days (over the next 3 weeks) for me now until I give back all the bells and whistles to the boss as I am taking what little leave I have left to spend quality time with my son studying sand and water before he heads off to boarding school. Im sure I will have mixed feelings when Friday the 23rd January rolls around - my last ever day as a NZ Police employee!! I guess one of the positives is that maybe I will get to celebrate New Years Eve from now on!!
