A break down of the top ten most common sunless tanning - TopicsExpress

A break down of the top ten most common sunless tanning myths. Myth #10 – Having a sunless tan protects the skin from the sun exposure. The theory behind this statement is that if you build a base tan your skin is less likely to burn when exposed to the sun. While this may or may not be true, a sunless tan is a cosmetic coloring of the skin, NOT a real tan. It will not protect you from the sun, You should always wear a good protective sunscreen when exposing your skin to UV rays. Myth #9 – Sunless tans don’t last. The reality is that all tans fade, whether it’s a sunless or traditional tan. Sunless tans last about seven days, but with proper care can last as long as ten days. Traditional tans last only slightly longer. The sunless tan will afford you the same tanned appearance without the UV side effects (e.g. peeling or damaged skin, premature aging and cancer). Myth #8 – The color I see immediately after the session is the final colour? No, sunless solutions with bronzers are a temporary color included to assist the technician with the application. It gives a pop of color for the client to see, but it is not representative of the final result. The final color depends on what level of solution you use and how long you left it on before getting wet. Myth #7 – The ingredients in the solution are more harmful than UV exposure. This simply not true. The Mayo Clinic has cited that sunless tans are safer than traditional UV tans for the obvious reasons (e.g. skin damage, premature aging, etc). Many of the same ingredients that are used in your shampoos, cosmetics, hairsprays and lotions are also used to create sunless solution. If you are concerned about the composition of your solution, ask your technician for a list of ingredients. Decide what you want to stay away from, and make your purchase decision based on that. Myth #6 – In order to get spray tanned you have to be naked. This is simply not true. We call this the “shy factor” and many times it’s more on the part of the technician than the client. Keep in mind the the technician is focusing on the specific body part while airbrushing not the whole physique. The awkwardness that you feel will quickly dissipate when you begin the session. That being said, the vast majority of clients will wear an undergarment of some type. Myth #5 – Spraying on more solution will give a deeper tan. Your skin will only absorb so much solution in a single visit. Over spraying will not deepen their tan, Your better bet is to choose the appropriate level of DHA to match your skin tone. If you wish a deeper tan You may also do a “double dip session”. This is when you return the next day for a second airbrush application. The technician will use an appropriate level of DHA. Myth #4 – Spray tan solution makes you stinky. Anyone who has gone to a spray tan booth or has used self-tanners in the past may have experienced the starchy smell that DHA produces. At one time it was a very prominent smell that was difficult to mask even with perfume or scented lotions. The sunless industry has made tremendous leaps with the development of spray tan solutions. Solutions are now created with a pleasant fragrances and neutralizers that do not leave a bad smell. Myth #3 – Using any lotion will keep a sunless tan looking fresh. As technicians we know that the key to a lasting sunless tan is moisture maintenance. However, if you use a lotion containing petroleum or mineral oils or containing Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) you will most definitely destroy the sunless tan. There are lotions on the market, that are designed to complement a sunless tan. We encourage you to use these types of lotion. Then you will get the longevity out of the tan. Myth #2 – Skin type has nothing to do with the sunless tan. When a woman, who has oily skin, is looking to purchase foundation, the makeup consultant is not going to recommend an oil-based foundation. This would only make her client’s situation worse. The same concept pertains to oily skin and PH balance with sunless tans. There are a host of different factors that can affect a woman’s PH balance (i.e. medications, foods, menstruation, etc). When a client has oily skin or their PH is out of balance it may be difficult for the sunless tan to fully develop. If you are taking medications its your choice to tell the technician. Have a shower with soap that contains no oils, no more than three hours before their session. I Myth #1 – Spray tanning turns you orange. Spray tanning will NOT turn your orange. Why won’t this urban legend die? One only needs to look at photographs of Snooki and Lindsay Lohan, or watch the famous episode of “Friends” where Ross turns himself orange in a spray booth. Even worse, you get a glimpse of a poor gal you pass on the street that looks like she drank three gallons of carrot juice. It’s not the solution that created the orange, it’s the technician. These are classic cases where a technician has used way too dark a color on their client or has applied several coats of solution within a single session. As technicians, it is our job to make our clients look natural. We want your to understand that just because we can spray them with a dark color doesn’t mean they will get the result they are looking for. If you go for the lighter shade, you won’t be orange.
