A brilliant video by Franklin Levinson The above video is a good example of how a horse can begin to not be so afraid of a flag. Notice I am not pointing the flag or my energy at the horse. This makes a big difference. At this time I could have been facing the horse and it would not have been a problem. If the flag is used with intention the horse will still respond. Desensitizing a horse to potentially scary things is great to do and builds a confident horse.
