A college freshman walks into her very first class at the University. It was unlike any class she had ever experienced. Instead of listening to her professor explain math and demonstrate problems on the white board, the college freshman spent her evenings watching lectures online in order to learn the material. She was expected to understand what she had watched, or come to class prepared with questions to help her learn what she could not understand on her own. Class time was set aside for her and her classmates to work on math problems, ask questions, and help each other. This is called a flipped classroom. The flipped classroom provides the opportunity for students to receive specialized instruction from the teacher, and the debate about whether or not this model works is becoming a more pressing issue in society. With more positives than negatives, the flipped classroom model is more beneficial to modern day students than a traditional classroom setting.
