A couple of days ago I walked Yucaipa Blvd in what is now called Historical Yucaipa. Found the area not as good as I remember. The stores are not that inviting. A liquor store /smoke shop, a tattoo shop. and an empty storefront. Many of the refurbished buildings need a paint job, and a facelift. Thought they had done that when the area reopened after the roundabout was put in. Found the area very disappointing. As I walked the area, I remembered the Blvd the way it used to be with all the stores and shops. I remember the paint store on 1st St and the Blvd. The wonderful smells of paint and wallpaper when you entered. Going in there with mom, to look at paint samples, and the books of wallpaper patterns, and colors. Picking out the paper and getting the paste (yes, once upon a time we had to brush the paste onto the paper). Next to it was the taxidermist. The building was also used as a furniture shop, rug and upholstery cleaner, and later Valley Cabin Shop in the 80s. Beyond that was Lockwoods, one could get just about anything there. Hardware supplies, misc. items. We also paid several of our utility bills there. The owners were wonderful people They were Holsingers biggest competition back in the day. As I continued, I came to what was the old hotel building. So many wonderful memories of the different shops in that building. At one time the Sheriff Station was on the end, next to them was a restaurant, and other shops. Later, Crosbys Yardage took over that section. Always loved those trips there, looking at the pattern books, them finding just the right material, buttons, and zippers. Next to them were a variety of clothing stores. There was one for children. I think it was called Togs for Tots. The owner had a poodle as mom would shop, I was busy with the dog. Next to that store, was a ladies clothing shop. Had to go up a bit of a ramp to go into that store. And next to it was the Koffee Korner. The Erickson family had it . Later in the 70s, the Lawlers had it. Will stop for now, Will go around the corner next time. Would love to hear from other Old Timers about their memories.
