A day I felt proud being a Nigerian. It was a lunch with the Ambassadors event organised by the US State Department in Washington DC. Over 50 countries were present and we all expected our Ambassadors for lunch. Two Nigerians were at this event and I was picked to join one representative from each country to welcome our Ambassadors from the lobby and lead them to designated tables for lunch. It turned out to be one of the most tensed assignments for me. Pix 1. The remnants. We watched a few ambassadors/ representatives arrive and one by one, my co-hosts took them to their tables. Out of 11 countries left by the time lunch was about to start, Tanzania and Nigeria were the African coutries yet to welcome their guests. Israel told me it would be a slap on her face if no one turned up. Well, a representative did show up for her. I was also going to be embarrassed if no one showed up from my country. A bit disturbed, I dropped the placcard and went to Table Nigeria to sit and start lunch. Not too long after that, one of the organisers tapped me on the shoulder Nigeria, your ambassador is here. Pix 2 My Ambassador arrived. Amb. Ade Adefuye, Nigerias Ambassador to the United States. Very humble and down to earth diplomat. Over lunch, we had a long discussion about Nigeria.... He told me how he didnt want to send a representative but had to come in person to meet us. I really felt happy, honoured and proud that he showed up. I showed him off to a few colleagues who had gone in ahead of me with their guests. A few whispered in my ear, you are lucky, mine sent a rep. Pix 3. The dessert. Symbolic of the icing on the cake for me. The day turned out well after all. God bless Nigeria!!!!
