A day of import and infamy is how it will be remembered. Each of us will guard diligently the thoughts of where we were when – and again when. We sat mostly in horror watching events that unfolded in front of our eyes for so it was timed. The target carefully selected not just for human tragedy but also to cripple an economy and so it did. A galvanized people came together and we rallied. I know so for I saw the flags, pins, banners, bumper stickers and I heard the politicians bellow and promise. And I will not forget that I heard the extreme left say it was sabotage, we brought it upon ourselves, we deserve this and I saw the moderate left forgive those who became called the “Truthers”. Another call was heard but not by the elders or the leaders. The call that is always heard by our youthful best – the call for; Revenge, Retribution and defend the homeland. And they went forth to do what they had been called to do. Now it is 13 years and the never forget rallies are held in small parks. Many flags remain at full staff and no businesses are closed to mark the day. We remember or so we will tell you. We have shirts, and pins and flags and banners and ribbons – somewhere. Yes they are around here somewhere. In the first years we sat riveted to our chairs as we watched our bombers and ships extract our revenge. We watched the bold youth called forth march to the sounds of the guns and win battle after battle. We promised them, oh yes we promised them many things. We saluted and greeted them in airports and such. We sent untold numbers of packages to them and should one of them fall thousands would attend services in somber recognition of service. But what now? What now that we have turned upon ourselves to nitpick the details so that not America sounds from us but parsed statements put forth by those whose vested interest is not America but politics? What now of those promises made and left to rot in the shadows of veterans dying awaiting admittance to a hospital. Today I will listen to the whispers in the gardens of stone where our best and brightest lay for eternity. That is the only place where truth abides. The spirits of those fallen who invested not sacrificed their lives for others speak to each other in whispers. For what was this all about? Which is the big lie? Why ask – they whisper the truth. This was about America. They whisper – You Owe Us. So what do we owe them? The answer is simple. We owe them the America they died for. Not for immigration, not for food stamps, not for minimum wage for none of those things was on their minds. I would like to think they thought of freedom, of opportunity and of a proud people and country that has at every turn defeated evil. We owe them that. We owe them to be that country – once again.
