A different species of Dragonfly from me this time.... Theres something prehistoric about Dragonflys that fascinates those who see them, not surprising really given that theyve been around for some 300 million years... Their ability to move around and switch directions mid flight is unparalleled in the insect world and helped by the ability to control each one of the four wings separately. For me its the eye I find incredible... Compound in nature, each eye contains as many as 30,000 lenses that gives them almost 360 degree vision, vital for spotting its prey... They use up to 80% of their brain to process vision alone making them one voracious predator. Im certainly glad we dont have the Dragonflies of yesteryear given the largest fossil found shows some had wingspans of 28 inch :) While it is true that Dragonflies are classed as Thermoforms i.e. The body temperature is controlled by the surrounding environment, they do have the ability to generate heat through flight so not totally dependant of air temp and the sun to warm them up.... Hopefully this picture show those huge eyes used so successfully for hunting on the wing. #Andover #Hampshire
