A few weeks ago, Dan introduced us to a friend he looks out for- Em. Em 21 Cnr Swanston and Flinders Street Em has only been in Melbourne for a couple of months after escaping an abusive, two-year relationship in Colac. Marcus was especially taken back by this being a born and bred Colac export. “I suffer bad depression but I’ve got a hold of it really...I think.” She was on the streets for her 21st Birthday. “Mum killed herself when I was eight and my dad was never around so this is where I am.” “I don’t really have family but I look out for everyone and they look out for me.” “Even though I’m homeless, I’ve given six different people sleeping bags, my clothes, everything.” “We all look out for each other.” Em is a keen sporting enthusiast but was unable to develop her junior talent through no fault of her own. “I did get into the Victorian cricket team but I couldn’t play. My auntie and uncle weren’t going to take me so I wasn’t allowed to. I got selected and everything but they said ‘we can’t be bothered watching you every Sunday.’” She has aspirations to become a tattoo artist and has a passion for dogs. “They’re the one thing you always know is going to love you- they’re loyal, honest.” She’s currently waiting for housing to come through but says the wait is long and frustrating. “I’m looking for it constantly...anywhere. I don’t get where I get it.” “My favourite quote is this: ‘think not of how far you have to go, think of how far you’ve already come.’- If I can get through my past there’s nothing I can’t get through.” “I want a husky.” #SCLS
