A few years ago I watched a documentary titled Trudell (I highly recommend it, it might be on Netflix). Prior to that I didnt know too much about John Trudell and had only heard of him on a few occasions, simply because I was largely uneducated on the role that he and other Native people played in the civil rights movements of the 60s and 70s. After watching that documentary and doing a bit of research though, I quickly grew an immense amount of respect for this man who I had never even met (watch the documentary and youll know why). Fast forward a few months to the summer of 2012 and myself and Gerard Mauthe were opening up for him as Point of Contact at Royal River Casino & Hotel in Flandreau, SD. Meeting for the first and only time that day, we didnt really say a whole lot to each other but I could tell he was a cool and highly knowledgeable dude. He took a couple photos with us and even offered to smoke some of his trees, but we very regretfully had to decline because we had both been sober for a few years by that time, and even though it wouldve been cool as hell to be able to say I got blazed with John Trudell, I couldnt bring myself to do it cause I know I personally cant keep my smoking under control lol (I get hella lazy and unproductive). This Sunday Ill be meeting John for the second time, and Im honored to be able to say hell take the stage at the 3rd Annual Cold Flows for Warm Clothes hip-hop benefit as a special guest. If you dont know about him, do some research and make sure to come check him out Sunday night at The Cedar Cultural Center. If you do know about him, then you already know what it is. Check out the post below. Peace.
