A friend posted this earlier and it really touched me. Jo Berry is the founder of Building Bridges for Peace. In this TEDx talk, she discusses losing her father to a bombing...I didnt just lose my father that day, whom I was very close to...but I also lost the me that was the free spirit, I was about to go traveling for two years, that had no cares in the world. For now I felt the conflict in Northern Ireland. The IRA was responsible. And I began to feel that that conflict was my conflict... and she set out on a journey to try and bring something positive out of it and try understand the ones who did it. Her work speaks to the human connection and our great need for compassion. I have been through some very tough situations and her message is one of encouragement. The very ones that hurt us are often the very ones that need our compassion the most. I have struggled in my own healing because, as many of you can relate to, my pain left me unable to know compassion; yet, I have spent my whole life coming to a better understanding about how to communicate compassion to others. Compassion is how we build bridges for peace. Compassion should be something we share on a humanitarian level simply because we each were deserving of life upon our birth. And sometimes, the very people in front of us are who need that compassion the most. Dont assume.
